On October 23rd to 24th 2003 a conference about nature compatible forestry of beech tree woodlands took place in the region of „Hohe Schrecke“.
Environmentalists, representatives of the municipalities, scientists and people responsible for regional development discussed which standards should be observed concerning natural forestry in beech tree forests.
At the end of the conference the participators formed a resolution for the preservation of the „Hohe Schrecke“.
- no clear-cuttings
- leave more than 30 m² of deadwood per ha
- protect everlasting trees that will never be cut down
- establish a mosaic of various old forests types
- planting of only indigenous trees
Dr Ralf Straussberger, member of the Bavarian „Bund Naturschutz“ stressed the richness of species in the „Hohe Schrecke“. The actual value of the region is not the old forest but the unique ecological importance. For more than 50 years no one used the forest. So we can find animals like the wildcat, middle-spotted woodpecker or rare kinds of bat. Animals that have become extinct at other places, but can live protected in the „Hohe Schrecke“. But for how long?
