The area af the Werra and its subsidiary streams extends to about 4569 sq.km. While the tailwaters are already dirty and inhospitable, most parts of the headwaters have remained clean, offering a habitat to many kinds of fish, plants and macrobenthos.
The most important aims of the project:
- reconstruction of the natural flow so the fish can swim upward instead of being held back by dams
- supporting of the natural use of alluvial forests and flooding fields -
- supporting the reconnection of backwaters
